Tips For The Ultimate Sandwich
Prep Time: 10 minutes (each recipe)
Makes: 2 Sandwiches (each recipe)
Italian Deli Sub Sandwich
For the Oil and Vinegar Dressing
♦ 3 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
♦ 1 Tablespoon red wine vinegar
♦ ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
♦ ¼ teaspoon Kosher salt
For the Sandwich
♦ sweet steak rolls (or your favorite sandwich rolls)
♦ provolone or mozzarella cheese
♦ combination of Italian deli meats, such as Prosciutto, Mortadella, and Uncured Genovese Salami
♦ 2 Roma tomatoes, sliced thinly
♦ Giardiniera pickled vegetables, chopped into small pieces
♦ hearts of romaine lettuce, cut into thin slices
Cut your rolls in half and toast them for several minutes until crunchy but not brown (350 degree oven for 6 to 8 minutes). If you do not toast the bread your sandwich will be too squishy. Combine the ingredients for the dressing and spoon a few teaspoons onto each side of the toasted bread. Make sure to layer the ingredients on the flat side of the roll (not the top) because it is more stable. In order, place the cheese, meats, sliced tomatoes – sprinkle a bit of salt on them for flavor, giardiniera, and finally the lettuce on the bread. Place the top piece of bread on the sandwich and give it a small press down. Cut in half and enjoy!
The Gambling Chef’s Favorite Deli Sandwich
For the Sandwich
♦ sweet steak rolls (or your favorite sandwich rolls)
♦ your favorite sliced cheese (I like cheddar)
♦ your favorite sliced deli meat (I prefer nitrate-free turkey or ham)
♦ avocado, sliced in half
♦ sliced tomatoes
♦ romaine lettuce
♦ pickle slices
♦ mayonnaise
♦ mustard (I prefer spicy brown mustard or Dijon)
Cut your rolls in half and toast them for several minutes until crunchy but not brown (350 degree oven for 6 to 8 minutes). This is optional but I find that a light toast keeps the sandwich from being too squishy. Spread some mayonnaise and mustard on each side of the bread. Find the bottom half of the bread to use for layering your ingredients. Take a half avocado and run a butter knife across it in both directions. Squish the avocado onto the bread and use a spoon or knife to spread it evenly. Sprinkle some salt on the avocado for seasoning. Place a few slices of cheese on top of the avocado, then some of the deli meat, followed by the tomato slices, which you should season with a sprinkle of salt. Finish with the pickles and then a crunchy piece of romaine lettuce. Place the top on the sandwich and give it a gentle press down. Cut in half and enjoy!
